Aermacchi 350 Race Engine.
We are currently working on a number of projects with a customer to remake Aermacchi race engines. The first project is to produce a self generating racing ignition for a heavily modified road engine which is used for racing.
The engine has a crankshaft which has been modified to eliminate the outrigger bearing.
The ignition components are based on components from PVL.
The stator plate carrier also acts as an extended crank case side or main bearing end plate.
This allows the original narrow main bearing to be replaced with a much wider bearing and the stator back plate now also carries the crank shaft oil seal.
When fitted the adaptor plate effectively acts as a bolt on modification to the crank casing so it is machined to tolerances of +-0.05mm on our in house CNC machining centre.
The second part of this project is to rebuild a works race cylinder head for the engine.
The combustion chamber had been heavily damaged and the objective of the project was to re-machine the combustion area back to the exact profile as shown in the works drawings.
Here you see the combustion area welded to raise the area above the original surface.
This shows the fabricated jigs which ensure that the head is held flat and secure.
This measuring probe on our machining centre ensures that the datum points for machining are accurately set.
Here you see the area after machining. The profile is now correct to the original factory drawing to within 0.1mm. This is possible due to an upgrade to our machine which was purchased by Williams GP Engineering which makes machining of 3D profiles programmable with very few machining stages. At this stage the valve seats and spark plug hole are ready to be re-machined.
